Bartolomeu Dias vas a famous explorer in the fourteen-hundreds. He was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1450. He is famous for sailing around the tip of Africa. At that time they called it the Cape Of Good hope. The first time his name appeared in Portuguese records was in 1487. His father was a famous explorer, too.

Dias made four trips. During his first trip in 1481 he tried to go around the tip of Africa, The Cape Of Good Hope. He took a fleet of trading ships along the coast of Africa to the Gold Coast. He didn’t make it all the way unfortunately. His second trip took place in 1487-1488. Again he tried to go around the tip of Africa. This time he made it around the tip of Africa. He discovered the Cape of Good Hope!! It was a very historic trip. At some point around the tip of Africa he hit a monstrous storm that lasted thirteen days! When he got to the mouth of the Great Fish River, he turned back because he knew he could make it all the way to the Indies.

On Dias’ third trip he sailed with Vascdo da Gama. Dias’ brother also accompanied him on the trip. They took a fleet of ships to the Cape Verde Islands. That trip took place from 1497-1498. They made it there successfully and stayed there for one month.

Dias‘ last trip took place a tragic one. He died during the trip while trying to get to the Indies. He made it around the tip of Africa but he did not reach the Indias. Dias will always be remembered for going around the tip of Africa for the first time!
